More than an elegant porcelain brand

Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther was born in 1794 and died in 1845. As the son of Johann Heinrich Hutschenreuther, owner of the Thuringian porcelain manufactory Wallendorf in Lichte, porcelain production was almost laid in his cradle. He grew up in an environment in which ceramic raw materials, body preparation, firing processes, craftsmanship and commercial thinking were closely connected.

The encounter with Hohenberg an der Eger

Around 1811, C. M. Hutschenreuther met his future wife Justina Reuss in the Franconian town of Hohenberg an der Eger. His future father-in-law, the head forester Ludwig Reuss, also became important for his later path. He introduced Hutschenreuther to the natural surroundings, landscapes and mineral resources around Hohenberg Castle. Out of this personal connection came an industrial decision of great historical significance.

Mineral resources as the basis of porcelain production

C. M. Hutschenreuther quickly recognised the value of the local deposits for porcelain and ceramic production. Alumina, feldspar and other mineral components formed the basis for developing ceramic bodies. What others may have seen simply as landscape, forest and soil, Hutschenreuther saw through the eyes of a porcelain maker: as the natural foundation for a new industrial production.

As early as 1814, he began producing a ceramic body at Hohenberg Castle using raw materials he had extracted himself. This was a decisive step: from knowledge, observation and practical testing emerged the seed of a porcelain industry that would later shape entire regions.

The petition of 10 September 1816

On 10 September 1816, Hutschenreuther submitted a petition for the extraction of alumina and feldspar, raw materials of lasting importance for the porcelain industry. This petition was far more than an administrative act. It was an early industrial decision, linking natural deposits with technical knowledge, entrepreneurship and the will to establish independent porcelain production.

The foundation of the Franconian porcelain industry

With this step, C. M. Hutschenreuther laid the foundation for the Franconian porcelain industry. Places such as Hohenberg, Mitterteich, Schirnding, Arzberg and Weiden later became closely associated with porcelain production and developed into important centres of an industry that combined jobs, expertise, craftsmanship, mechanical engineering and regional identity.

Hutschenreuther’s achievement was not merely the founding of a factory. His importance lies above all in having created an industrial basis: identifying raw materials, securing rights, conducting production trials, applying technical knowledge and turning a regional location into a production area. His work therefore contributed substantially to the later strength of the porcelain industry in Europe.

The licence to establish a porcelain factory

On 7 November 1822, Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther received the licence to establish a porcelain factory. From that moment on, experiments, raw material searches and professional ambition became an approved industrial enterprise. This date marks an important turning point in the history of Franconian porcelain production and the beginning of a name that would be perceived as a quality standard for generations.

The lion mark and its claim to quality

From then on, the name Hutschenreuther porcelain, the famous lion mark, stood for high-quality German table porcelain. For many decades, consumers, hotels, retailers and collectors associated this name with quality, elegance, durability and a high standard of form and decoration.

The brand became a firm part of German porcelain culture. It stood not only for products, but for a whole world of craftsmanship, industrial production, design ambition and regional expertise. Hutschenreuther was therefore one of those brands that helped shape the meaning of German table porcelain both at home and abroad.

177 years as number one in German table porcelain

For 177 years, the name Hutschenreuther porcelain was regarded as a leading force in German table porcelain. From the work of a pioneer emerged a company name known far beyond its region.

Importance for region, technology and industry

The significance of Hutschenreuther cannot be reduced to brand value alone. In the Franconian porcelain region, close relationships developed between porcelain manufacturers, machine builders, raw material suppliers, decoration companies and trading structures.

In 1999, the decline of the company began. Since 2000, essentially only the once great name has remained. After bankruptcy, one of the most important porcelain factories in the world closed its doors. For German porcelain history, this was more than the end of a company.
