Lion Head Bowls
An enduring tradition of serving soups and rustic dishes is upheld by the classic lion's head tureen, crafted from white, gleaming porcelain. In alignment with this tradition, Holst Porzellan offers a comprehensive range of lion's head porcelain, encompassing mini tureens and large soup tureens. We also offer matching accessories and attachments such as lids, saucers or serving plates for many sizes.
The lion's head has a long tradition and a curious story to tell. According to history, Henry I incorporated part of his family crest into his royal banner after his marriage to Adelheit von Löwen in 1121. For the festivities, Henry commissioned the production of a special bowl made of pure gold, which was to bear his wife's coat of arms. Some 600 years later, the royal porcelain manufactory in Limoges adopted the symbol and tradition of this lion's head, decorating some of the royal porcelain with this very image of the lions of Britain. In today's context, this reproduction would be considered an infringement of utility model protection, which further highlights the controversial history surrounding the white gold.
