Salad servers and large porcelain salad bowls
Salad dishes are large porcelain bowls without lids that are used at the table for all kinds of side dishes, such as salads, potatoes, rice or vegetables. Salad dishes are not intended for direct consumption and should hold at least 3 portions. Traditional salads have often been transformed into a terrine by placing a lid on top.
In colloquial German today, salad servers are often referred to as salad bowls, which is technically incorrect but has become naturalised in our language. Originally, a bowl stays in the kitchen and does not find its way to the table. This is why the master server refers to salad servers as bowls and not dishes. It is important to note that porcelain bowls are designed for use at the table, with guests and on buffets. They should be selected to complement the porcelain and cutlery set in terms of both form and function.
Porcelain bowls offer a significant advantage over cheaper ceramic bowls, particularly in the case of larger bowls. Food served in salad bowls is typically removed with serving cutlery, ladles or scoops. However, the serving cutlery is often placed on the dish in an ungentle manner, which can cause the edges of ceramic bowls to chip. It is not possible for plastic bowls, melamine bowls and other plastics to match the hygienic properties of hard porcelain as a bowl. Many such synthetic materials even release harmful substances onto the food when exposed to heat. Metal bowls are also often unsuitable for allergy sufferers.
This section presents our selection of Holst Porzellan large salad bowls, suitable for serving a variety of dishes. We have summarised the overall topic of serving salad in bowls and plates for you under serving ideas/salad.
