With the website relaunch in 2025, we decided to make a stricter distinction between jugs, pitchers, carafes, watering cans and sauce boats and have divided these many different types of use into two main groups. In this section, you will find the pourers and sauce boats from Holst Porcelain, categorised according to their use.

For about 50 years now, opinions have been divided on the difference between a sauce boat and a pourer, and why a milk jug is called a milk jug and not a milk carafe. We have revised the definitions in 2025 and come up with much more specific distinctions than Wikipedia and the current AI programs.

According to the definition of the porcelain makers, the difference between a sauce boat and a gravy boat is the height, width and the accessory of a sauce boat's lower part, which the gravy boat lacks. However, this distinction is no longer applied today and, in our opinion, is no longer valid. Due to their smaller filling quantities compared to jugs and pitchers, the shape characteristics concerning the centre of gravity are not important for pitchers and sauce boats. However, the spouts and nozzles should be shaped so that they drip as little as possible and do not contaminate their surroundings with residues of coffee cream or sauces. The handles, if present, should act as a stabiliser or balance weight. The inside of a ladle must be easy to clean and built in such a way that it can be hygienically cleaned in the dishwasher. Handles and spouts must not have any cavities in which liquid residues can collect.

The distinction between a milk jug and a sauce boat is mainly a matter of individual definition, especially since a technical classification of the two sectors of porcelain production and gastronomy is once again different.

On this page, we therefore limit ourselves to a summary of the classic milk & cream jugs and sauce boats for sauces, which are served together with meals. Particular attention is paid to ensuring that the handles, bases and spouts of the milk jugs and cream jugs do not leave any space for dried milk or cream residue. The milk jugs and sauce boats are all made of high-quality porcelain. This gives the accessories for the table a high degree of adaptability with virtually all standard white crockery on the market. They can be used with existing series and shapes as desired, without appearing out of place.
